Don't Forget About the Coolant
Even with all the emphasis placed on proper monitoring and maintenance of the lubricant in equipment, many people often forget that the coolant exists. Yet coolant condition monitoring and replacement are just as critical to improve reliability and prevent crevice corrosion in cooling systems. When replacing water-based coolants, always dilute using only distilled or deionized water — never tap water. In many locations, the chloride content in tap water is quite corrosive and can greatly increase corrosion rates in cooling systems. (Daryl Beatty, Dow Chemical)

How to Combat Break-in Wear
When a machine is first put into service, there is a period of time known as the "break-in" period. During this time, the machine creates wear debris as components begin their initial motion. By vigilant monitoring of wear debris as well as understanding the forces at play during the break-in period, you can ensure that your machines will have a longer life and experience fewer breakdowns.
